Along with the replies on this list, I got a couple of off-list replies (named
removed to protect the guilty -- you know who you are!):

>I did one of the novice exams to verify that I knew enough about Linux
>to skip the 101-type Linux class. Turned out I did a very poor job
>because I did not know how to format 1.4MB and 720K floppies using the
>different /dev/fd* entries. And I did not know details about PCI video
>cards, ide partitions, etc. I am sure the advanced RH classes will do
>better, but this was a bit demotivating for me.

And:

>If my company or our client were interested in certifications, they
>would have demonstrated it by paying for training in those
>certifications for our current staff. They don't pay for training.

And:
>I like many others have mixed feelings about certifications. I have an
>ITIL certification. Additional ITIL certifications are a money grab and
>I won't fund it, I just don't see it as worthwhile.

>I am planning on getting my LPI Linux cert. LPI is cheap, and the materials
>are on the mark. I don't see it in zSeries work but it may be important
>for Linux-only work and possibly for zSeries work later on.

OTOH, it will force me to be rigorous about working my way through areas of
Linux that I might not otherwise hit until I need them, and if my company will
pay for it, why not?

Thanks to all who replied!
