Yes, that is the type of program I was looking for on the Linux platform. There are a couple others available on the VSE side, VSE2PDF which would work really well and the current beta release of CSI's TCPIP stack, which may work for the current projects (free and supported also). Well, free as we already pay for the CSI stack that is.
But I just looked that the ghostscript docs. Wow, a lot of functionallity. Perhaps too much<G>. If the VSE way isn't sufficient or it take too many MIPS, I will look at ghostscript to see if I can offload the CPU requirements to our IFL. And Ghostscript can be used in conjunction with CUPS to make things even easier.
