I did get a message that the chpids were already online. The problem is that two different things are mixed up in 2.4 /proc/chpids: - Setting a chpid logically online/offline from within Linux, which doesn't have any effect on the HW status. That's why you get the message that the chpid is already online: You didn't set it logically offline before. - /proc/chpids is also attempting to track the HW status of the chpids. When you configured the chpids offline on the HMC, machine checks were generated and Linux consequently marked the chpids as n/a. However, no machine checks were generated when the chpids were set online again on the HMC, so Linux doesn't get to clear the n/a status. (This inability to track the HW status of chpids was the reason why 2.6 only tracks the logical state within Linux of the chpid). > > Can I recover these chpids without an IPL? > Should my heavy handed approach have signaled the chpids offline instead of > n/a? Your system should be functioning as normal. The POM mask should have been updated at some time, just not the chpid status.
