Well, I'm using both but this is for a client with z/VM with multiple LPARs running linux servers. Hipersockets are great and allow for large high volume data transfers between LPARs. One of IBM's favorite configurations is a z/VM IFL with Websphere connecting to a z/OS LPAR with DB/2. Protects your large z/SO investment with a modern face. Can't say which is better. If your data traffic volumes are moderate than either scenario is quite reasonable.
With OSA Gbe you can mark the chpid as shared, share between the LPARs, and then both lpars can be on the same network. This becomes really nice once you put z/VM in as you can have vswitches in all LPARs, use OSA port sharing with multiple LPARs, and be o nthe same network as your physical servers. I'm using hipersockets for an "internal" network that is not routed to the outside. This lets me use one lpar an an entry point, then by using CMS client program like telnet, ftp, rscs, do maintenance on all LPARs over the hipersocket network. Again it's a z/VM thing. Also you should take a look at a technique called hipersocket extension. I've never used it as I have no need for it. It's in a redbook. David Tim Hare wrote:
Since I don't have z/VM yet, I'm installing in an LPAR (as I've posted before). I have the opportunity to choose hipersockets for my communications link - but since hipersockets are "self-contained" within the z/Series hardware, if I choose to use them would I then be effectively passing through one of my z/OS IP stacks to reach the "outside" world (I need connectivity to desktop browsers at the least for demonstration purposes)? Would it be better to choose the OSA GbE for now, and worry about hipersockets when we move to z/VM and multiple virtual servers (heh - a new definition for the MVS acronym!)?
