Hi, Alan.

We work with z/VM 4.4 (probably will migrate into 5.1 at the end of this
year or beginning of 2007).

Now, to your questions:

- We do backup z/VM data (user minidisks) and archive DB2/VM databases. We
use DDR (for user minidisks) and DB2 ARCHIVEs into 3590 tapes. For now we
use no encryption systems to do our daily backups BUT we will have to
consider doing so in case that any tool exists.

I hope this helps.

Alan,

I didn't see any responses to your question. Unusual for this group.
:)

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but having recently been the recipient
of a "backup tapes that included your financial data have been lost" letter,
I will say that if you can provide such functionality without seriously
impacting the schedule for the other things we discussed at the Technical
Steering Committee, I would be all in favor of that.

Subject: Requirements for encrypting tape drives for z/VM

[Cross-posted to VMESA-L and LINUX-390]

Hi, Everyone. The VM Development team needs your help once again.

Back in July of last year, IBM published a Statement of Direction for
encrypting tape drives (Announcement 105-241). We would like to know:

- If you currently backup or archive z/VM data, does your business require
that you encrypt said backups/archives? If so, what are you using?
- If you are not *currently* required to encrypt them, do you expect those
requirements to be levied against you? If so, when?

Thanks,
      Alan
