You did better than I, but after I figured the line-wrap above, I
eventually came up with this:
ldapsearch -x -H ldap://Nabarlek.demo.lan/ \
-D 'cn=John Summerfield,cn=Users,dc=wagtail,dc=lap' \
-W -b 'dc=wagtail,dc=lap' | head
which spews lotsa stuff.

I like these because they prompt me to try things out. I've recently
inherited the school's Windows network in addition to the Linux which I
already had and some macs, so I need to learn these things.
