OK. From what I've found... A V8 client can't talk to a V7 database. A V7 client can talk to a V8 database running in 31 bit mode. A V7 client can't talk to a V8 database running in 64 bit mode. The only client that will talk to a V8 database in 64 bit mode is a V8 client.
I haven't been able to find a zLinux copy of DB2/UDB V8.1 (or 8.2) that can be installed in 31 bit mode. I only find s390x rpms. DB2 Connect is only needed for ascii clients going to MVS, AS/400, VM and VSE databases. DB2 Connect isn't needed when ascii clients go to UDB (ascii platform). And apparently DB2/UDB Enterprise Server Edition, has a facility to allow a mainframe client to go to the UDB platform. What I have been trying to do, for the last 2 weeks, was to have VSE act like a client to DB2/UDB. But, instead of going directly in that direction. 1. I installed DB2/UDB V8.2 on Suse 9.0 64 bit. 2. Tried to use my DB2/UDB V7.x (with fp 11) on my XP box to connect to Linux. Finally got an error message about 32 vs 64 bit missmatch. 3. Went on a tangent on being able to install a 31 bit DB2/UDB V 8.1 database. Apparently, I can't find a download for this. 4. Today, have started connecting DB2 for VSE 7.3 as a client to DB2/UDB 8.1 (64 bit).
