The other "feature" with an FTP install is the issue of a home directory. I believe the FTP install treats the path that you provide as being relative to the FTP user's home directory (a la an anonymous FTP server). So if the user's home directory is /sles9x and you specify a directory of /sles9x, then the FTP install will try to start at /sles9x/sles9x. So did you try either setting the FTP user's home directory as / (in which case relative == absolute), or by leaving the home directory as /sles9x and specifying / as the path? Just a guess ...
