Hi Rob, Thanks for your response. I know that using the VM session as a zLinux console is clunky to say the least. You always have to remember not to get into a situation that would cause a CTRL-C. Also, getting my without the use of vi. I've become pretty used to using sed in some cases.
Your second suggestion is what I do normally, but now that some of these new zLinux systems are installing with LVM, this is making my life miserable when it comes to mounting on a "rescue" system and fixing a problem. We've figured out how to do it in RHAS 4.0 using the RedHat boot menu, but we still haven't figured out and easy way for SLES 9 yet. Thanks! Do remember that in single-user mode your console is not very practical for doing things in Linux. My experience is that for most situations where you would boot a Linux PC in single-user mode, with Linux on z/VM it is much more attractive to use another running Linux virtual machine to link to the dead server's disks and do whatever you need to do there (e.g. fix network address, repair file system, etc).
