I did get around this problem by using a different editor:

  export VISUAL=the
  crontab -e
  crontab: installing new crontab

Well, I suppose this symptom is not endemic only to Slackware then. I
did experience it only on Slack so far though. If think the combination
of vim and Dillon's cron 2.3.3 is the one to blame for this.

Try using a different clone of vi, such as elvis, for editing the
crontab:

~  $ env VISUAL=/usr/bin/vi crontab -e <user>

(In case you're wondering how to differentiate between the two most
common versions, Dillon's cron doesn't require the -u option to specify
the user, whereas Vixie cron does.)
