The distro for the Intel system is RedHat. Vim is 6.2.98. What four packages
are you talking about?
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ rpm -qa '*vim*'
vim-X11-6.3.035-3
vim-minimal-6.3.035-3
vim-common-6.3.035-3
vim-enhanced-6.3.035-3
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ man vim

Unfortunately I installed the Intel system from an install server. Then the
install server lost its power supply. So now I don't have any way to upgrade
the system. I would like to install SUSE, but I have to figure out how to get
the State of California to buy it.

I use VIM on several systems, including z/OS Unix, Mac OS X, and Linux. I
noticed on the Linux systems the extend features don't work. I noticed this on
Intel and Z. The features I miss are the -o option (as in vim -o file1 file2),
selecting blocks of text with V, and being able to split the screen with cntl-w
s.

My question is: can I enable these with some set command, or are these compiled
out?
BTW: I did try to find the answer on the web.

I checked on z/OS Unix VIM and there are several more things compiled in
compared to the Linux version.

You don't mention what distro or what vi packages you have installed. On
RH systems vim is the default vi, but you don't get the full behaviour
unless you have all four packages installed.

Debian defaults to using another vi, nvi I think, and I don't have a
running SUSE system to see what Novell does.

The presence of the vim command does not mean you actually have vim
installed, you need to check with your pacakge manager.
