Just a simple hint for everybody interested... To rescue a x86 server, you can boot from the installation CD and enter in a rescue console mode. You can do the same with z/VM, but without a CD (you guessed it...)
This works with SLES8 and SLES9, but I assume it should work with other distributions... Just run the installation procedure from the beginning (punch some files, ipl and so on), then when the startup script asks you to configure the network, choose 0) no network. You will be moved to a rescue console, logged in as root. Then, you will need to know the dasd assigned to that machine. This example assume you have dasd 150 to 155 plus 159 defined. type the following commands : modprobe dasd_mod dasd="150-155,159" modprobe dasd_eckd_mod modprobe dasd_fba_mod Your dasd devices should now be available in the rescue console. Type the following to confirm : cat /proc/dasd/devices | cut -c1-78 Assuming your root filesystem is located on /dev/dasda1, type the following : mount /dev/dasda1 /mnt chroot /mnt You might want to mount other filesystems. At this point, you can run zipl, mkinitrd, passwd or any command you need to rescue your Linux machine. Just don't forget to unmount any filesystem (umount -a), type exit to quit the chroot jail, unmount remaining filesystems (root fs), then re-ipl your Linux machine. The most paranoid might want to run : sync ; sync ; sync prior to re-ipl the system. This works for about anything you need to do in a rescue mode : lost root password, wrong entries in /etc/fstab, forgot to run zipl or mkinitrd after adding new devices to the system and so on! I hope this could help some people on the list! Greetings. On 7/5/06, Rich Smrcina <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
