Yes, when you are making the backups from within the Linux system
itself, there are many options to make backups of a running system
that are more or less useful to restore your data.  The snapshot
through device-mapper at least gives you a backup that is as good as
what you get when you pull the plug.

But I think we were talking about doing backup from the outside.

I have looked in the past at options with LVM to suspend writing dirty
pages to disk, signal something outside Linux to take the physical
backup, and tell LVM to resume writing to disk. We did not implement
it because the process appeared a bit risky.
