There's that pesky cron.hourly, too. I also remove the MARK messages in
syslog.

If everybody is running their cron scripts at the exact same time,
that could do it.
Consider that one of the things that cron typically does as a daily
job is to run finds on the whole filesystem to find old backup files,
old log files, and so on, and remove them.
Try varying the time that cron.daily runs so it differs on each of
your systems in /etc/crontab.

This doesn't look good either but maybe it's harmless.
Can't help you with rcd/rug. *I* wouldn't trust my tools to
automatically *apply* maintenance, although downloading it in the
background is pretty safe.
