I'm not sure what the hardware problems would come up, but I'm running on a z/890, with z/VM 5.1, using SLES7, SLES8 (31 bit), SLES9(31 bit) and SLES9(64 bit).
Other than "new" hardware, perhaps something better than OSA and/or Hypersockets, (and I don't know if the 2094 has something better in this area), the older Suse works fine. Now, of course I'm not using a Virtual Switch with SLES7 (not supported), Some of these are using VCTCA and others using IUCV (couldn't make up my mind). Anyway, you get the idea.
