Currently we're using RHEL4 on z and Fedora Core for desktops. We keep running into a wall with Java and different products using different versions of Java. Between the GNU Java compiler, IBM's Java for Eclipse with MQ Series to Sun Java for AJAX. We're swimming in too many version of Java to manage. Does the need for multiple Java installations exist with all linux distributions for zSeries (especially SUSE) ? Which leads to the 2nd question: Has anyone had really good experience with proprietary software on Linux systems? If so, did the distribution matter any or just the comfort and experience level of the staff make the process easier?
One hopes that certified software actually works, but beware when it's necessary to track kernel versions. ATI and nVidia video drivers have a certain reputation: I don't use them, but it seems not all users of either are entirely happy. Generally, I avoid proprietary software, but I do have flash reader on my (FC5) laptop. It wasn't working at all att all (no text displayed), and yesterday I accidentlally forn the workaround on fedorafaq, and implemented it. Shortly after, flashreader went into a loop and I had to kill firefox. That aside, it still does not work on every flash application I find:-( I suppose the HP printer support is sort-of proprietary in that it's fully-maintained (AFAIK) by HP though in an open-source manner. On the weekend, I bought myself a Laserjet MFC; when I got home I found RHEL4 (I'm actually using a clone) doesn't have the support, but FC6Beta2 does, so I boilt (without any problem) the source rpm on a basically-nahant box and installed it on the WBEL system. Running it gets a nasty glibc message about double-linked lists, and it doesn't work at all. The HP response: we'll look at it when FC6 is released. In contrast, I've had sympathetic responses from authors of tar, bash, growisofs, knoppix, jikes, the barebones cd and many others, where money was not involved. -- Cheers John -- spambait [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tourist pics http://portgeographe.environmentaldisasters.cds.merseine.nu/ Please do not reply off-list ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390
