Slightly different details here than on the IBMVM list. I hope this is
relevant and accurate.

Ahhh... The SAN thingie. We're all having fun in the SAN box now, aren't
we? It's more like a network, so CP ATTACH/DETACH doesn't apply. That
is, you have FCP adapters defined (much like dedicated OSAs) and you
leave them there. No need that I can see for taking them away.

You will find this "network" to be much faster than what you're used to
(TCP/IP). SAN is more like a brand X set of channels, and is rated
faster than FICON, so any backups you do will be a lot quicker than the
networked backups you are accustomed to so far. It will be device access
(writing directly to tape) so the fabric will need controls. Make
friends with your storage team. The tape drives are out there in the
fabric.

You need z9 hardware for N-port V12N. You also need z/VM 5.2. Without
both, all SAN-connected guests look like the same client host.

zLinux and IBM 3592-E05 tape drives

We are thinking about buying some IBM 3592-E05 tape drives for the Open
System group (well, actually, it's comming out of their budget), and we
will put them in our, yet to be purchased IBM 3494 robotics unit. The
tape drives will be dedicated to a FC SAN thingie.

Apparently, we can attach the mainframe to the FC SAN thingie, using
FCP connections. Then, zLinux can have access to them.

As FCP tape drives are not known to VM. And I have some 20-30 Linux
images running under VM, what is the procedure to attach/detach these
tape drives to each image?

Or is it something stupid, like I have to dedicate the drives to one
machine and then backup over vswitch from one machine to another to the
tape drives? (I say stupid, as backing up over "communications" usually
takes more resources than backing up over hardware....directly to the
drives.)
