It might be worth trying to boot with the cio_msg=yes kernel parameter. If you can find messages like "Detected device xxxx on subchannel yyyy..." for your devices and later "SenseID: unknown device xxxx on subchannel yyyy", this means that Linux can see the device but can't talk to it (this could indicate a cabling problem or such).
