[snip argument about firewalls]

You're missing the point I'm trying to make here. It's not the provider

Au contraire!
I responded to the technical q about ftp going through firewalls, and
then to the further q about fw vendors who choose to inflict their ideas
about security on its clientele.
of the FTP or HTTP service that has the issue, it's the potential
consumer of the service having policies that say "no external access
from this machine". Whether FTP is secure or not is a symptom of the
problem, not the problem itself.

Whether BigCorp has policies regarding provision of or use of ftp
services is a separate matter, in the hands of BigCorp. I never said
differently.

Whatever BigCorp's policies are, it has to have in place a workable
means of getting Linux into its system.

Whatever BigCorp's policies are, they're BigCorp's policies, not those
of its firewall vendor.
