John,
Ubuntu is what we run on our desktops, so I can appreciate your position.
We had assumed that enlightened z Debian users would accept source
tarballs for a commercial application, but we could be mistaken.
I can assure you that we will make .deb binaries available for Debian on z
if a customer wants it.

Speaking for myself, I will if I must run an rpm through alien for my
use, but I'd be peeved if my software vendor did that. I would, if
source is provided, expect 'apt-get source' to get it.
Risks I might imagine with running a debianised rpm are similar to those
with running a foreign rpm on any rpm-based distro, and if there are
associated install/uninstall scripts I would fully imagine them untested
on my platform, if they run at all.
