No, no magic.  I'm just getting confused between the mainframe and 
non-mainframe installs of SLES.  Looking at /inst_source on the initrd, it 
appears that they ripped out (almost) all of the HTTP support for their S390(x) 
version.  Not sure why they would have done that, but it is indeed, not a 
choice for the mainframe.  Argh.
