Yeah; I googled "storage benchmarks" after I sent my email, then got
distracted: could I attach a DS8300 to my whitebox Sempron?
Of course you could, but the HBA would cost twice as much as the
whitebox
;)
Twice?
A lot of pluggable PCIX, and PCIE fibre channel HBAs are less than $1000.
It's been sometime since I've bought a PC. I'm probably out of touch. How
much would you spend?
If new, then
http://www.austin.net.au/systemmodel.asp?IDNo=3&color=beige
$AU 329. I might add a disk, RAM.
Quite possibly used kit at auction
I recently got a pair of used systems, much as above but Intel PIV HT
CPUs, higher-spec mobos and including disk for about $AU300 each. One
runs to firewire, both have add-on graphics cards with 256 Mbytes each,
DVI connectors, lotsa fans, good (well, better) cases.
Still, those prices (even after conversion) seem pretty cheap.
Note to those flogging off their old kit at auction: reinstalling
Windows does not erase the drive. One of my favourite tricks is to boot
Knoppix and
strings -n8 /dev/hda | less
Both these systems had hda erased (first time I've seen that!), but one
also has a second disk, and that had Windows XP Professional installed,
and Google knows, it's not hard to reset the administrator password!
