I don't see why you would have had the problem in the first place. I've been
connecting SLES9 (31 and 64 bit) to a vswitch under both z/VM 5.1 and z/VM 5.2
without any problem.
SLES9 31 bit was installed with SP1.
SLES9 64 bit was installed with SP3.
I'm going to first assume that your install started like:
3 OSA
(0.0.0600*..)
suselin7
linux28.stlouiscity.com
192.168.193.128
255.255.252.0 Netmask
192.168.195.255 Broadcast
192.168.192.1 Gateway
205.235.227.50 DNS
stlouiscity.com DSN Server Name
1500
I've learned that 3 (OSA) is for OSA adapters and vswitch. 10 (Hipersockets)
is only for hipersockets. Apparently, hipersockets is a different animal even
though I've found sections of many manuals stating that vswitch was a software
implementation of hipersockets. So I gathered I could just trade the vswitch
connection for hipersocket and start running. Wrong assumption, in my
experiment.
And I assume that your NICDEF was like:
NICDEF 600 TYPE QDIO LAN SYSTEM VSW1
And from my SYSTEM CONFIG:
DEFINE VSWITCH VSW1 RDEV 2019 201C
MODIFY VSWITCH VSW1 GRANT LINUX28
VMLAN MACPREFIX 020001
My IOCP looked like:
CNTLUNIT CUNUMBR=061,PATH=(CSS(0),11),UNIT=OSA
IODEVICE CUNUMBR=(061),ADDRESS=(2010,15),UNIT=OSA,UNITADD=00
IODEVICE CUNUMBR=(061),ADDRESS=201F,UNITADD=FE,UNIT=OSAD
My guess is that you were saying your network device was something other than
OSA. And when you gave it an OSA connection, you then said it was an OSA
connection.
I was really supprised how easy vswitch was.

Hello,
I have successfully resolved the HCPIPN2833E issue by temporarily
undoing/redoing a couple of the zVM steps in the installation process.
1)In USER DIRECT C, comment out the NICDEF statement in the LNXMAINT
default profile (we are z/VM 5.1, not 5.2)
2)In USER DIRECT C, add the following statements to the definition of
the SLES9X z/VM UserID:
a) DEDICATE 600 xxxx (xxxx is the 1st virtual OSA address)
b) DEDICATE 601 yyyy (yyyy is the 2nd virtual OSA address)
c) DEDICATE 602 zzzz (zzzz is the 3rd virtual OSA address)
3) Run the sles9x installation exec.
4) Undo the changes in #1 and #2 above to begin using the VSwitch once
the install process is complete.
Thanks to those who responded to this thread. It's nice to know folks
are helpful.

http://www.vm.ibm.com/virtualnetwork/ will get you to the z/VM Virtual
Network resources page. From there you can make your way to the
