Easy way: Download and build the ansitape utility from
www.sinenomine.net. Ansitape allows you to read and write ANSI and IBM
SL tapes. 

If you just want to dump the file on tape, then mounting the tape and
'cp file /dev/<tapedevice>' will produce a unlabeled tape that can be
read by VSE as a NL tape. Do not use tar or cpio. They write formats
that VSE can't understand.
