The simple answer is that that's exactly why you want to run VM to host your
penguins. If that's really not possible, then you can map devices in the lpar
definitions to some degree, but not infinitely. If its just dasd addresses, you
could probably do that. I don't know what else you could try...

At some point, it costs more to mess with lpars than it does to just get VM.
With the recent pricing changes, that point is about 6-7 days of
head-scratching. I won't reiterate all the nice things that VM can do; you may
be able to sell it as a zos recovery aid (a one pack VM system is a powerful
recovery tool...).

Subject: Cloning RHL in an LPAR - to run on another Hardware?

Hi Mark,

many thanks for taking the time to publish the howto.

Basic condition for cloning is that the cloned system should run on the same
hardware.

But what if one wants to clone the system tun run on another hardware?

(This is basically possible for MVS: we have cold standby hardware in another
location, the basis for
our catastrophe scenario, and we can start the same MVS system on the cold
standby hardware.
I am no expert for the gory details, but this is how it works.)

In other words: is it possible to modify a cloned system in a way that it could
run on a cold
standby system - i.e. changing channel path and further network definitions in
a way described
in the present Clone Howto for DASD and file system?

Installing RHEL from the scratch on the second hardware is of course a
possibility. But the cold standby system
is accessible only on 10 days per year so that no regular maintenance is
possible.

Has anyone an idea for this state of affairs?

thx
Anna
