I think what we'd want is to be able to have initrd in an NSS be an
uncompressed xip2fs filesystem.  xip2fs executes/reads directly from the
filesystem; no copies.

Yes, that was what I tried to explain. Not sure you need xip2 for that
since I thought initrd / ramdisk already have such tricks in it. Since
kernel modules need to match the kernel, it seemed attractive to me to
have a single NSS for it rather than match a separate DCSS with the
NSS.

But you achieve the same if you build in the few modules that we all
need (dasd, qeth, etc) and skip the entire ramdisk. Considering how
long it took before the distributors provided a kernel that can be
shared in NSS, I am not holding my breath. Let's hope Mark can address
some of this with SuSE.
