In my case, when I tried the -m option, I ran out of something (handles?  mount 
points? I forget what it actually was).  But I had sufficient disk space to do 
the copies.  The server is SLES9 with SP1 installed.
 
If you use the -m option and don't pay attention to the error messages, I would 
suspect that your installation of zLinux, may have some problems.

I always run mksles9root without -m option and make it
accessible via NFS. Never had any problem with
symlinks and such.
Could it be there is some issue when you just loop
mount images compared to copy them ?
