I think this still applies.

Basically, you create a script in /etc/init.d/, which takes specific
parameters, and then do a symlink to that script from one or more of the
/etc/rc?.d subdirectories, said symlink having a specific prefix (Snn to
start and Knn to kill, where "nn" is a number).
