Is it me, or does the update from one release of SuSE Enterprise Linux
to another version via "fresh install" seem strange to anyone else?

I'm not (yet) aware of any specific documentation for this. The only
"tip" I've seen is don't try to use YaST System Update to do it. What
you'll need to do is get a good backup of your system, and then IPL the
SLES10 installation kernel just as though you were going to be doing a
fresh install. The installer should detect an existing Linux system and
give you the option to update it.

After the update is complete, I would double check to make sure that
services you expect to be started (or not) are still being started (or
not), configuration files haven't been over-written, etc.
