Hi Chris,
that's a good question and basically it is an indication for a problem if
you get a 'end_request: I/O error....' on a DASD device. But anyway there
are situations where this behavior is expected.
For example it might happen if you use multipath-tools above the dasd, or
during IPL of a not formatted DASD device (DASD tries to read - 63xx is a
define extend, 47xxx is the locate record and 86xx is a read command - and
gets a UnitCheck since there is no valid block available on the device).
To make a final statement I would need the complete /var/log/messages file
and the output of 'cat /proc/dasd/devices'.
