It is called "gouging". I.e. "mainframe" DASD people are used to paying
$nnn/MB, so let's keep doing it even though we can make it cheaper. Why
pass on the savings when we can just up our profit margin and the
mainframers will never scream at all. OK, I'm cynical. The ECKD
emulation software is more difficult to program, I guess. But it reminds
me of long ago. We had some BSC modems. The same modems did SNA by
simply flipping a switch. But, to flip that switch, cost an extra $nnn
(don't remember the cost).
