Sort of, but not really. FTPS is defined by RFC 4217, which provides for new FTP subcommands to enter/exit the TLS environment. This is what the z/VM 5.3 FTP server *and* client support. I don't know whether the "normal" Linux ftp client has been updated for RFC 4217 yet. I believe FileZilla on SoureForge.net supports ftps. Transparent TLS can certainly be done, but that's not the same thing. Our research showed that client support for FTP using a transparent TLS connection was rare.
