It's still valuable, but it's more a hack until we can provide something
more sophisticated like unionfs support. Much of what basevol/guestvol
does could be done better by unionfs.

Probably. Generally accepted practice in the Unix world separates /,
/usr, /var, /opt, /home, and /srv (if used) into distinct filesystems.
/etc and /tmp are often also split out, but less commonly. Whether you
make them separate LVs or PVs is a religious issue.  There are arguments
for both.
