I need to move all of my Linux volumes from an Hitachi box (that will eventually be going out the door) to a new box. Most of the Linux dasd are 3390-3 with a couple of mod 1's used for swap vols.There are almost no mod 3's on the new box, and several of the system volumes have reached the point where they need to be migrated to larger volumes so I would like to move most of the mod 3's to mod 9's. I can use FDR full volume restore to put the data on the new volume, but I'm afraid that I'll loose the extra space on the new volume if I do. I can do this if I have to, but it doesn't really seem like a smart way to accomplish what I'd like to. I have also used the instructions on linuxvm.org for moving part of a Linux file system to a new volume, and had no problems; but I don't think I've ever used it to try and move a whole volume, especially when the old volume is more than 90% used. Is it possible to move the old volume by moving the root subdirectories one at a time, and then rebuilding the ipl text? This kind of seems like the "long way around the barn", but if it's less trouble and likely to have fewer problems, I wouldn't mind. The systems in question are all currently running under VM 5.2, and I could probably use a VM utility, but I'm not very familiar with any of them.
I searched all the emails I've saved from this list for ideas, but my hard disk went belly up earlier this year and I lost a lot of the information I'd saved, so I didn't come up with much. Most of the information I found was more concerned about adding new dasd, not about moving to larger dasd. I also found some advice on how to find out what or who is chewing up the space on my full volumes. To the individuals who posted that information, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Now, I'm hoping someone can help me with a good way to move from smaller to larger capacity disks. Before I forget, I was going to move the model 1's that are used as swap space to VM mini disks, and I was thinking about using a mod 9+ (aka mod 27 or larger) to hold the swap mdisks for several of the Linux systems. Does anyone know if this is a good, bad, or doesn't matter idea?
