Kate, What distribution (and version) are you running? What performance monitor are you using? As Rob said, much more information is needed to even start to figure this out. It doesn't seem at all reasonable to me that simple https connections would drive so much CPU utilization (although https uses more CPU than simple https, due to the SSL component). Is this running on z/VM? If so, how big is the guest? How much virtual storage did you give it? What does "cat /proc/meminfo" show you?
