Good question. The short answer is that I defer to either Steve Womer, if
he cares to comment, or to the current thread "Applying updates to
multiple servers".

But I will at least elaborate.  The paper was originally written at
Nationwide Insurance based on their "real-world" experiences. I helped the
ITSO (the Redbook group at IBM) convert it to a more general Redpaper.
There were steps written to address the type of maintenance that you ask
about. We had hoped to write up an example on how to move cloned servers
from SLES 10 to SLES 10 SP1. However, we ran out of time and pages (we
were near the number of pages that the ITSO considers a book, not a
paper). So we compromised and generalized the details into the section
"Maintenance Options". Everyone seems to agree that this section is just
too thin to be of use.

I know this is probably not the answer you were looking for, but this is
