SLES10, or SLES10 SP1?  I would very much recommend the latter.

You don't need a separate /boot.  I would, however, recommend that your root 
file system not be an LVM LV, and that you break out /home, /opt, /srv, /tmp, 
/usr, and /var into LVs.

Unfortunately, I don't know.  Having looked at this in the past, I believe 
that's the error LVM throws out.  Did you tell YaST to format the DASD volumes, 
and then tell the Partitioner to create two partitions on the volume(s)?
