Eric, A number of people have pointed you to some good places. More specifically, for understanding what you're doing to need to understand to get started, look at either my Linux Installation Planning presentation http://linuxvm.org/Present/SHARE109/S9233mp.pdf or the article http://www.zjournal.com/index.cfm?section=article&aid=766 That's only going to cover the Linux piece. If you're not familiar with z/VM either, then Mike's Cookbooks will help you get started there, but you should also subscribe to the IBMVM listserve, which fills the same need for z/VM that Linux-390 does for Linux. If you're going to try out SLES10 (which I strongly recommend, aside from being a Novell employee), you'll want to download the SLES10 SP1 Starter System to simplify things even more: http://download.novell.com/Download?buildid=M5V5-w8h2M0~ Be aware that there's one known bug, and that's in the sample CP directory entry. Some of the entries are not in the order CP requires them to be, so validate that against the z/VM manuals. You'll also want to look at the little script I wrote to generate SLES10 AutoYaST control files. This will help you automate the creation of your first test system, with that being a very minimal system, as opposed to a bloated one. You can find that at http://linuxvm.org/Patches/#autoinst Whether you use the Starter System (please, you won't regret it), or you download the SLES10 SP1 DVD image yourself, look in the /docu/en/ directory. You'll find two PDF files in there, named preparation.pdf and startup.pdf. Look through those as well. Finally, this mailing list and IBMVM is likely to be your best resources. Both lists are happy to help newcomers, so use them when you need them. Don't bang your head on the wall too long before asking for help, if it comes to that.
