By all means, take Mark's suggestion and start with the SLES10 SP1
Starter System, that the nice folks over at Sine Nomine Assoc. have put
together. It will save you tons of aggravation in getting your first
Linux guest installed and running.
A corrected USER DIRECT entry for the starter system is included here:

If you're going to try out SLES10 (which I strongly recommend, aside
from being a Novell employee), you'll want to download the SLES10 SP1
Starter System to simplify things even more:
http://download.novell.com/Download?buildid=M5V5-w8h2M0~ Be aware
that there's one known bug, and that's in the sample CP directory
entry. Some of the entries are not in the order CP requires them to
be, so validate that against the z/VM manuals.
You'll also want to look at the little script I wrote to generate
SLES10 AutoYaST control files. This will help you automate the
creation of your first test system, with that being a very minimal
system, as opposed to a bloated one. You can find that at
http://linuxvm.org/Patches/#autoinst
Whether you use the Starter System (please, you won't regret it), or
you download the SLES10 SP1 DVD image yourself, look in the /docu/en/
directory. You'll find two PDF files in there, named preparation.pdf
and startup.pdf. Look through those as well.
Finally, this mailing list and IBMVM is likely to be your best
resources. Both lists are happy to help newcomers, so use them when
you need them. Don't bang your head on the wall too long before
asking for help, if it comes to that.
