When I try to uncompress initrd.img.old, I get an error from gzip saying 
"invalid compressed data--format violated."  I'd like you to check the md5 
checksum on the Linux guest.  What I download generates this:
> md5sum initrd.img.old
7430b818940171e526a19ebd5c66495d  initrd.img.old
