I've not heard of any data integrity issues with using barriers on EXT3.  But, 
it might not provide a performance boost, depending on the size of your files.  
According to some research I did, writing a lot of 10K or less files will be 
slower than with barriers off.  I _have_ been hearing of problems with file 
systems being remounted read-only when barriers are turned on, and some sort of 
temporary disk error happens.  We'll be putting out an updated ext3 driver to 
hopefully correct that problem.
