This method will use the z/VM FTP server to provide access to the installation media. The method to do that is proprietary, but Martin Schwidefsky thinks he might be able to provide an open source driver that will do the same thing for an LPAR install, without giving away any interface information IBM wants to keep private. When I asked him about it, he didn't seem to think it would be too awfully hard.
