Why would you use putty? To logon to a VM guest, you should be using TN3270. You would use PUTTY to connect to the Linux machine and do a Linux signon.

At that point I can get the logon prompt for linux and login BUT from there I'm completely lost as I can not find the correct key sequence to perform an 'enter' or 'backspace'. Is there a how-to or other document on how to access and perform basic recovery actions (such as when the linux server itself has network issues) using the telnet to z/vm and logon to linux approach?
