To follow up, I was *not* building the tree correctly. With help from Mark
Perry and Mark Post I believe the updated mksles9root.sh script *is* now
building it correctly (note the code has not been well tested).  Thank you
to both Marks :))

At the start of the install process I still get the error that the gateway
cannot be pinged. But the workaround is simple - answer "yes" to the
question "Do you want to ignore this error and continue anyway? (Yes/No)".
