Hi All,
Thanks very much to everyone for replies to my inquiry about using a Linux VM on z/VM to replace or in lieu of particular CMS-based z/VM service machines. In general the reaction from everyone, including locally, was that is was a good idea with a lot of promise, but, and as reported from this mailing list, because CMS is efficient for what it does, it is hard to justify on a cost savings basis. This was also the reaction from my local management so I will not be pursuing this project at the moment. On the other hand, I now have a Linux VM installed [Debian] that is mostly "out of sight" and can be used to try out different things. I also tried to promote the idea of thinking of Linux on z/VM as a z/VM feature. By that I mean that rather than looking at Linux as a full-blown OS [on z/VM] it might be better to view it as a "commodity OS" environment/toolkit that brings various tools, etc. into the scope of z/VM. For example, if there was a situation on z/VM that would benefit from using a language like python in particular, I could see setting up a Linux VM to supply the environment where python could be used. Sorry for the trivial example but I believe this emphasizes the flexible strength of Linux. Putting Linux together with z/VM takes that flexibility, I think, to a whole new level. I am convinced that now that Linux is "out in the wild" and seeping into IBM mainframe environment [despite entrenched resistance] it will be used for exactly these kind of purposes along with its more typical open-server uses. I am still happy to hear of people's experiences and innovations along these lines.
