Mark, Carsten,
there really is a datcompression operation in mt included in package cpio.
It seems that the Device Drivers manual is referring to the mt command
in package mt_st, which has the compression operand. Especially as the
count attribute for the "mt datcompression <count>" command should work
like this according to its man page:
"If the count is one the compression status is printed. If the count is
zero, compression is disabled. Otherwise, compression is enabled."
The Device Drivers manual describes this differently.
The mt command in package mt_st is actually "mtst" although man mtst
talks about command "mt". A little bit confusing.
I tried the former mt:
zlnx006:~ # mt -f /dev/ntibm0 datcompression 1
Can't read mode page. Are you sure you are root?
mt: /dev/ntibm0: Invalid argument
This may mean, that compression is set in the tape system configuration
so that it cannot be modified by a user application. I'll check this
with our hw people.
Or maybe mt has not correct interface to the driver. I'll test mtst
command, too.
I will return with my findings so hopefully this thing could be cleared.
Thanks,
Juha

According to Device Drivers, Features, and Commands - SC33-8289-04, it
could be activated in tape_3590 driver with
# mt -f /dev/rtibm0 compression 1
but "mt" in this distribution does not support "compression" command.
According to the man page for mt, there is a "datcompression" operation. It
could be that the Device Drivers manual is referring to that. If it works, let us know,
to make sure the manual gets corrected.
