Hello list,

On a SLES 10 SP2 system, it seems the last line in /etc/hosts is:
  # tail -1 /etc/hosts
  127.0.0.2 gpok189.endicott.ibm.com gpok189

Where the DNS name of the machine is "gpok189.endicott.ibm.com". But the
IP address is not there.

Why is "127.0.0.2" and not Linux's IP address there? Is this something
new in SP2? I don't recall seeing it in older versions of SLES. Thanks.
Mike
This is the "new" way of pointing ht local hostname(s) back to
localhost, rather than the on the first line c.f.-

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 otslinm.it.state.nj.us otslinm otslinm.oit.state.nj.us

from my Ubuntu linux /etc/hosts file.

Any one of the three names resolves back to myself. I believe it comes
from Debian first, but has become popular in general.
