If Oracle provides a script that fits in with the rc.d startup/shutdown mechanism, then the SIGNAL SHUTDOWN of the Linux guest should work properly. If your doing that now and you are seeing the corruption, perhaps the timer is set too low or the shutdown script isn't working.
