Given that you can only have 3 partitions per volume (at least on

AFAIK), I don't know if that's really a good idea. If these folks are
used to the 5 or 6 that are present in Intel land, that might be even
more frustrating than the current setup.

Directory will add things like LDAP support.... We had AD in house so
that
is what the product uses for user authentication.

Use PAM. Then it's not the application's problem what authentication
source is used.
