Re-reading Oracle's response, it does mention export/import... it seemed to be 
worded
such that I thought they were to be used together, but I guess they are two 
different
options (export/import and RMAN).

They've never used RMAN, hence their caution.  I suggested the export/import 
option.  I
think they've been trying to use a backup.
